This program benefited the HNBA Latina Commission. In support of the Latina Commission's mission, the HNBA Region II partnered with the Commission to implement the Latina Leadership Academy - a program designed to address areas identified as key to shattering glass ceilings and securing advancement and long-term success - at a regional level, hosting quarterly workshops, discussion forums, events, and networking sessions.

$0

As previously stated, this event helped advance the the Latina Commission's mission. Specifically, the curriculum for this event built off the successful programs on Grit and Growth Mindset at the national level and delved into concepts of executive presence, cultivating leadership skills, and what it means to be authentic in organizations where Latinas remain underrepresented at all levels. Additionally, this event created a forum for women to exchange experiences, share advice and best practices, and expand their network.

The event covered a discussion with 3 panelists, who shared their career-related lessons learned from the most recent 2008 financial crisis, and how those might apply to the COVID-19 crisis. They provided tips on how to manage this time wisely and pro-actively through virtual networking opportunities, as well as how students and young attorneys can broaden their skills/interests in order to be a more adaptable intern/associate/new hire in the future.

This event represented the interest of Hispanic legal professionals because of its timely focus on the pandemic and it’s near- and long-term impacts on hiring/retaining students and recent grads. Although so much remains unknown about how the pandemic will change the legal landscape, we wanted to assemble speakers who could share their personal experiences and observations from the most recent economic crisis, the ’08 recession. We believed the event accomplished its goals of 1) offering personal insight on what may be in store 2) instilling confidence that, like in ’08, YLDers can get through this and still kick-off successful careers and 3) providing practical solutions on how YLDers can wisely spend this time, e.g., by expanding and strengthening their networks, learning how to be adaptable for future employers, and more. This event supported the HNBA mission of providing professional training/development to its members.

This event was intended to support the Chicano Hispanic Law Students Association at the University of Texas School of Law. Deputy RP in Austin, Juan Alcala (partner at Holland & Knight) was primarily responsible for organizing this event. In addition to serving as a mentoring/pipeline event for Hispanic law students, we also used it as a recruiting event for new HNBA members in Austin. We also invited affiliate members of Austin Hispanic Bar Association. We also had UT law professors in attendance who were curious about HNBA and our work.

Dean Farnsworth of UT Law School made introductory remarks.

Deputy RP Juan Alcala and I conducted roundtable discussions with the law students to talk about challenges of law school and career paths. All of the students expressed gratitude for HNBA's presence and we had a lot of follow up from students seeking mentorship. We encouraged the law students to become individual members of HNBA and asked CHLSA to become an affiliate of HNBA. We had tried last year to get CHLSA to become an affiliate member, but due to internal issues, they did not pursue the opportunity. CHLSA members who attended the barbecue also attended our Annual Conference in New York and Juan and I touched base with these students. They are asking Juan and I to perhaps speak at their end of year banquet.

It also promotes the success of Latino students in the legal profession, not just during law school, but after graduation. Great relationships are formed. This event will invite a panel of HNBA affiliated lawyers and other non-HNBA Latino/a lawyers to help our students navigate and optimize networking opportunities with a focus on those promoted by the HNBA specifically. We will introduce many HNBA opportunities to the students through the topics of networking and mentorship in order to engage more students in the Region XIII division. We are in a rebuilding phase of gathering more HNBA involvement in our region, so we hope to pass out the "Welcome Packets" in order to promote the HNBA and encourage students to become members as well as encourage them to actively participate. We would also like to note that we would like to use a local Latina vendor for our food, and for that reason it is slightly more expensive than it would be to order other types of food.

It advances the mission by promoting unity among all the Latino bar associations and providing a space for over 200 attorneys and law students to network and learn from each other. Our sponsors, United Technologies and Fried Frank, were interested in meeting lateral candidates for potential positions. We created a dedicated "lounge" area for them where they met prospectives. We also promote each bar association by having their leaders speak and promote their events. We also had the first Latino District Attorney in NYC, Brooklyn DA Eric Gonzalez, speak and provide an excellent example for our members.

Region X is again looking to team up with regional legal aid society and APABA-CO (similar to the Gavel Gap we did in the fall) to offer an in-depth training for lawyers on providing trauma-informed care to clients on Friday, April 27, 2018. Many people in poverty experience trauma as the result of violence, human trafficking, family instability, unanticipated health problems, homelessness, and other crises. Advocates—including LASC lawyers helping low-income individuals and pro bono attorneys helping with visa cases—will be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide effective and informed representation. Though we are still working on the official agenda , we are anticipating that this will be a full day CLE/training.

The purpose of this event is to educate African American and Latino students about pathways towards elected office and the legal field in general. Historically, minorities are greatly underrepresented in the legal and political arena, and that needs to change. Through a panel of judges, legislators, and practitioners, this event will provide insight, tools, and tips for students who are interested in legislative advocacy, policy analysis, and judicial placements. Furthermore, this event aims to connect students with mentors, in order to enrich their network and support system as well as reinvigorate them by giving tangible exposure to successful African American and Latino professionals.
