Program Overview
The ELLA Leadership Program is designed to support high-potential attorneys working in law firms and in-house legal departments. This six-month professional development experience is tailored for attorneys with approximately four to ten years of experience, a pivotal stage where leadership opportunities emerge and the advancement gap for attorneys tends to widen. During this critical window, attorneys seeking to advance must be strategic and intentional in their approach, developing the tactical skills, visibility, and awareness that position them for future leadership opportunities. The ELLA program equips attorneys at this stage with culturally grounded leadership development programming and coaching support, helping them to enhance and advance their professional careers.
As highlighted in the law review article Still Too Few & Far Between: The Status of Latina Lawyers in the U.S., Latina attorneys remain significantly underrepresented in leadership roles across all sectors of the legal profession, especially as law firm partners and senior corporate counsel. ELLA was created to meet attorneys at this critical point with the awareness, strategies, and support to help them take greater ownership of their careers.
The program combines culturally grounded leadership workshops, small group executive coaching, and peer accountability to help participants build confidence, increase visibility, and take a more intentional approach to their career growth. Participants gain greater clarity about their leadership path, develop their presence both within their organizations and across the profession, and begin to define the kind of leader they want to become and how to move in that direction.
What the Program Includes
The program provides a holistic approach to leadership development, incorporating in-person and virtual workshops, small group executive coaching, and peer accountability. These elements work together to empower participants, fostering confidence, self-advocacy, business development, executive presence, business awareness, authenticity, fulfillment, and overall well-being. Participants can take control of their own career trajectory by:
- gaining clarity on what truly matters;
- recognizing and shedding what hinders their progress; and
- building lasting connections with peers equally invested in growth and leadership
Who it's for
Early and mid-career attorneys in law firms and corporate legal departments with approximately four to ten years of experience who are looking to grow as leaders, elevate their presence, and build a sustainable and fulfilling career—whether they are on the partnership track, pursuing senior in-house roles, or exploring their next step.

Participants gain clarity on what really matters in advancing to leadership roles, navigate obstacles, and develop authentic connections with other lawyers committed to growth and leadership.
How do I apply to participate?
What is the time commitment for participants?
ELLA spans six months from Sept. 2025 – Feb. 2026: In-Person Kick-Off Full Day Retreat (9/3) in Washington, DC, Six Virtual Monthly Leadership Workshops, and Monthly Virtual Small Group Coaching.
Is there a cost to participate?
The six-month program costs $1,250 per participant. The HNBA Latina Commission subsidizes this program, valuing it at $7,500 per person.
How are participants selected?
A selection committee reviews applications based on commitment and alignment with ELLA’s mission to elevate lawyers into leadership roles.
What is the difference between ELLA and LLA (Latina Leadership Academy)?
ELLA is a six-month intensive leadership development program for primarily law firm and in-house attorneys with 4-10 years of experience while LLA is a one-day in-person program for attorneys in all legal sectors. Please review the comparison chart [HERE].
ELLA and the Latina Leadership Academy are both accepting applications. May I apply to both and choose if I am selected?
Review the program comparison chart [HERE]. Please apply to the program that best aligns with your professional development goals.
Who is eligible to participate in ELLA?
HNBA Attorney Members (4-10 years of experience) with a commitment to leadership, community engagement, and professional growth are encouraged to apply. While the program is designed primarily for attorneys in mid-to-large law firms and in-house legal departments, all are welcome to apply. Based on space and group composition goals, we will consider applicants working in other legal settings and will notify selected participants after July 25th.
Do participants need to attend the full 2025 HNBA Annual Convention (AC2025)?
No, AC2025 participation is NOT required. ELLA takes place in downtown DC before the AC2025 Welcome Reception which will be held at The Gaylord, National Harbor (about 30 minutes away). View AC2025 Agenda [HERE].
What does “culturally grounded leadership” look like in practice during the workshops or coaching sessions?
Culturally grounded leadership in ELLA means we acknowledge how cultural values shape your life and career experiences and empower you to show up authentically and lead with confidence on your own terms.
Are the workshops interactive or lecture-based? Will there be any prep work or readings required beforehand?
Workshops are primarily interactive. Some sessions may include pre-work (reading or worksheets), activities, exercises, etc.
How are participants matched with their small coaching groups and executive coaches?
Groups are assigned based on a number of factors, including time schedule preferences, group composition, and developmental goals.
How does the small group coaching work, and what can I expect?
Once a month, you’ll meet virtually in a small group of 4 to 6 attorneys, led by a certified executive coach. These sessions follow a mastermind-style format, where each participant brings a real challenge and receives input, perspective, and accountability from both the coach and the group. You’ll build on that month’s workshop topic and apply it directly to your career, with the support of peers who understand your experience. Coaching is not about giving advice or quick fixes. It helps you shift mindset, clarify what matters, and move forward with more clarity and intention.
What’s an example of how coaching can help?
If you’re struggling with imposter syndrome, constantly questioning whether you belong, comparing yourself to others, or fearing you will be exposed as not good enough, coaching helps you get to the root of those thoughts. You’ll learn that self-doubt is a common response when you’re stepping into something new or challenging. With the right support, you can shift how you see yourself and your abilities, quiet the inner critic, and lead with more confidence and self-trust.
