HNBA LGBT DIVISION
The HNBA Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Law Division serves the HNBA members and the profession by monitoring and advocating on the legal issues affecting the Hispanic lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community and by promoting the expertise, advancement, and empowerment of Hispanic LGBTQ+ legal professionals.
The LGBT Division is empowered and expected to:
- Highlight the contributions made by Hispanic LGBTQ+ legal professionals.
- Increase awareness among the general HNBA membership of the role of Hispanic LGBTQ+ legal professionals with the goal of securing the continued support of HNBA allies.
- Educate the HNBA membership on the legal issues facing the Hispanic LGBTQ+ community.
- Serve the Hispanic LGBTQ+ community by fostering the participation of the HNBA’s membership in pro bono, mentoring, and other volunteer activities within the LGBT community.
- Advocate justice and equal rights for all members of the Hispanic LGBTQ+ community by issuing press releases, filing amicus briefs, and undertaking legislative efforts and other appropriate actions as needed.
- Help to make the legal profession welcoming and supportive for Hispanic LGBTQ+ legal professionals.

The HNBA LGBT Division Legacy Scholarship awards law students with demonstrated success in law school and commitment to promoting LGBTQ+ rights, inclusion, and equity, particularly those which intersect with the HNBA VIA (“Vision in Action”) goal to support the development and advancement of Hispanic students, legal professionals, and community members.

HNBA LGBT Division Aliado/a Award
The intent behind establishing the Aliado/a Award is to create a lasting HNBA tradition that recognizes individuals whose leadership, advocacy, mentorship, and service have strengthened the LGBTQ+ Hispanic legal community through meaningful allyship. The award reflects the Division's belief that resilience is built through partnership and that lasting progress is achieved when allies intentionally use their talents and volunteerism to foster opportunity, inclusion, belonging, and professional growth.
By honoring those who stand beside our community with courage, integrity, and purpose, the Aliado/a Award celebrates the shared responsibility of advancing the HNBA's mission while reinforcing that a stronger, more inclusive legal profession benefits both the LGBTQ+ Hispanic legal community and the communities we collectively serve.

Founded during the 2007–2008 Bar Year, the HNBA LGBT Division actively promotes its members through mentorship, regional programming, and a day-long summit at HNBA/VIA conferences. It also provides scholarships to LGBTQ+ law students and young attorneys. The Division is committed to the success of its members in achieving their full potential and is working toward greater representation within the legal profession. We welcome all to join us in these critical efforts by supporting our initiatives and helping provide meaningful mentorship and scholarship opportunities for students and young attorneys advancing the Hispanic LGBTQ+ community.
