Special Committee for Afro-Latinidad in the Legal Profession

HNBA Special Committee for Afro-Latinidad in the Legal Profession

The goal of the Special Committee is to promote and provide a safe and inclusive space for Afro-Latinx lawyers to share experiences, resources, goals, career advancement strategies, and opportunities to diversify the legal profession. To that end, the Special Committee has been charged with: 1) organizing initiatives and programs that will help educate HBNA members and the larger community on the history of colonialism, colorism and embracing blackness within the Latina/o family; 2) recommending how the HNBA can best provide education, resources regarding career options, education management, and development skills training for Afro-Latinx lawyers; 3) identifying ways to liaise and collaborate with law schools, especially HBCUs; 4) providing support to future Afro-Latina/o attorneys, increasing the representation of Afro-Latino/a lawyers in the legal profession, and ensuring a more diverse legal profession; and 5) providing guidance on HNBA publications, position papers, amicus briefs and/or initiatives to ensure that it does not overlook the Afro-Latinx community and to make recommendations when appropriate.
