HNBA SPECIAL COMMITTEE ON ELECTION INITIATIVES

The Election Initiative Committee builds off of HNBA’s decades-long legacy in protecting Latinx voting rights. After many years of fighting against widespread discrimination in voting, this Committee was formed in 2020 with the purpose of expanding our voting rights work to seek additional, systemic measures needed to protect American democracy and make it truly inclusive. The Committee responded by determining protections needed during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as outreach to local election officials to not only ensure, but also expand, Latinx voter participation. The Committee led HNBA’s successful efforts to recruit and train hundreds of Latinx lawyers and community members to serve as poll workers as well as election protection advocates. In 2021, the Committee will continue to study and recommend measures such as restoration of the full protections of the Voting Rights Act, and continue to provide substantive expertise and analysis to HNBA members as well as other interested persons.
